Greg Downey & Mansun
Details: Irish DJ and producer Greg Downey has joined forces with Mansun vocalist/guitarist Paul Draper to rework Mansun’s classic Wide Open Space from their acclaimed 1997 debut album, Attack Of The Grey Lantern.
The album spent a total of 19 weeks in the UK Chart, knocking Blur’s self-titled album off the no. 1 spot. At year’s end it was included in the Guardian’s ‘Top 10 Pop Albums of The Year’, and NME’s, Q Magazine’s and Melody Maker’s ‘Top 50 Albums of 1997’. Thirteen years after its original release Mansun have announced a special 3-CD edition of the highly acclaimed album that will be available this June. Consisting of the original album re-mastered plus two bonus discs of b-sides, acoustic, live and alternative versions, it will also include Greg’s remix of Wide Open Space.
“Wide Open Space was one of my all-time favourite tracks so decided to do a cheeky remix of my own for the summer”, says Greg. The mix subsequently got massive support from the likes of Ferry Corsten, Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold and Above and Beyond, appearing on Radio One several times including Eddie Halliwell's Essential Mix live from Cream Amnesia.
After all the hype, Mansun main man Paul Draper contacted Greg saying he really liked the track and thought it would be great to do a new version.
Working with the original vocals Paul and Greg sympathetically re-worked the classic into a big-room peak-time monster. Happily with the support of Parlaphone/EMI records the new treatment will now be available officially for the first time on Nebula Music / EMI and is set to tear clubs and festivals to shreds this Summer.
