Interview with the Future Freakz
Details: Lose Control’s main residents, Future Freakz (aka Russell Biles and Vince Nysse) are fast becoming a musical force to be reckoned with. Not only are they an energetic DJ duo, they are also responsible for creating some of the most driving music the House scene currently has on offer.
Here they lift the lid on how the sexy house party ‘Lose Control’ was conceived, why the industry’s tastemakers are all over their remixes, and what’s in store for their bank holiday shindig on Sunday 4th May @ Pacha.
How did Lose Control come about, and why did you choose Pacha for its home? It seems everyone’s fighting to get into Pacha these days!
Rus:
‘Lose Control’ came about as I guess I wanted to get stuck into promoting some parties again! I’ve been promoting on and off since my late teens and that’s in fact what got me working in dance music in the first place and launching our new party at Pacha just sort of came about naturally. A couple of good pals of mine are in on the action too, we just love it and it’s wicked to have dipped my toe back in again!
What’s the music policy? Is there something in the water that makes your crowd ‘Lose Control’ or would that be strictly down to the music policy?
Rus:
The music policy is quite simply, House music. We tend to start proceedings on the more Funky, though still on the pretty cool side of House, and then as the party progresses, we wind it up! As our style (Future Freakz) sits more on the upfront and driving side of things, we play later on in the night; this works perfect for us and the crowd seem to love it too so it’s all good! The Hoxton’s have played last set at our last two parties and they definitely hold the title for having the crowd ‘losing control’!
How did you get ‘in bed together’ with ‘Future Freakz’ and what do you think is the key to a successful production / DJ duo?
Rus:
Ha, was waiting for that one! We’ve known each other for over a decade and I guess working together was always inevitable for two friends that just live and breathe dance music, and who only live down the road from each other. Vince used to play at a night I used to promote back in the late nineties and he was already on his way to becoming a fine writer/engineer. We’ve been mates since and then a couple of years back, I signed a record of his to a label I run and the rest as they say is history. Future Freakz was born when we decided we wanted to start a new production moniker and remix the single on the Electro House tip and we just got the bug and haven’t looked back since! Twelve months later and I signed the record to AATW so was dead chuffed at that and Future Freakz is now flying and our sound has evolved a lot along the way.
Vince:
Well, Rus has pretty much said it all, haha. I think the key to success though is communication. Don’t get me wrong, Rus and I love to party hard and have a good laugh, in the studio and out, but we do regularly sit and talk during studio sessions about our (Future Freakz) direction, and the best way to take it; which is very important to keep moving forward.
It seems your remix work is being swiftly signed by the likes of Gusto, All Around the World, and Loverush Records. Are you signed to any labels?
Rus/Vince:
Not exclusively no, we’ve been working with some wicked labels and remixes are starting to fly in. We’ve had the pleasure of working some of our all time fave records in recent months, two highlights being Opus 3’s classic ‘Fine Day’ & the mighty ‘Happiness’ by Sound De-Zign - what a buzz working these two!
You’ve received support from the likes of Robbie Rivera, Carl Cox, Peter Gelderblom, and Oliver Lang. What do you think it is about the way you remix a track that’s creating the demand?
Rus:
I guess we’re delivering mixes that these guys want to support and play! Carl Cox has been playing our stuff since last summer, in fact he opened his cover mount CD for Mixmag last year with what was our second ever production, not a bad start eh!? Robbie Rivera has recently given our remix of ‘Fine Day’ 10/10 and that was such an honour. When we remix we try and keep the original vibe of the track, but also give it our own angle. So far, so good I’d say!
Vince:
Yeah, I feel it’s the way we’re not writing your stereotypical House/Electro. We are trying, and I’d say succeeding in creating a melodic twist with House driving grooves. I think it’s so important to stand out and do things differently. This must be playing a part; otherwise the work wouldn’t keep coming in and we wouldn’t be getting top marks from some of the biggest producers/jocks on the planet.
Do you have any other productions in the pipeline that you’d like to tell us about?
Rus/Vince:
We’ve just finished a remix for an artist from the US that’s due on promo this summer, it was a bit different to work a track that didn’t originate as a dance record. We’re also working on a new single and some new mixes are coming through as we speak!
What can we expect from your set at Lose Control on 4th May?
Rus/Vince:
A mix of older stuff and new, we’ll be dropping some fresh stuff hot from the studio, but also some older faves!
The Hoxton Whores are headlining this event, who are rather fond of Sambuca in the DJ booth. What do you require in the booth to get the party going?
Rus:
Vodka and orange all the way for me, doubles mind! I know, a bit of a nancy boy drink, I don’t want to know I’m drinking alcohol! The odd Sambuca thrown in for good measure is a nice touch when I’m feeling brave!
Vince:
Vodka and Redbull. Can’t get enough of the stuff!
When was the last time you really lost control?
Rus:
Writing this! Ha!
Vince:
Listening to Rus type while I’m trying to write chord structures!
Nice one guys. We’ll see you at the front for Lose Control’s ‘Pop Your Cherry’ party at Pacha, on Sunday 4th May.
